Danbury Mint brings back the '53 Buick Estate Wagon in a 5,000 piece Limited Edition

Monday, 14 September 2009 15:06 by Peter
Just received a mailing today for owners of the 49 Oldsmobile 88 Wagon, referring to this Buick as the companion piece. They're both Woodies, of course, but beyond that I don't see them as a real pairing. I already have the beautiful green version which was discontinued some time ago, so I will probably pass on this one, but if you missed out then I suggest you get your order in for this one soon. Click here to see my scanned images of the mailer.

Danbury Mint addresses recent Quality Control issues...

Monday, 24 August 2009 19:31 by Peter

"Manny" from DM offered the following response to concerns recently expressed by collectors...

    Danbury Mint quality issues

I wanted to take a moment to respond to some recent posts regarding the quality of Danbury Mint die-cast replicas.

First, let me apologize for the recent spate of QC problems -- specifically blistered/bubbled paint or "paint rash" that some of you have unfortunately been experiencing on certain replicas (e.g., '69 Bobcat GTO, '59 Cadillac Convertible, LE '56 Packard Convertible). Sorry for not posting sooner, but we wanted to make sure we had all our information correct and had taken appropriate action before publicly responding to the situation.

We appreciate all feedback from our customers -- praise when we meet or surpass your expectations, and constructive criticism when we don't. You folks are passionate collectors, and can always be counted on to give an unvarnished opinion on our products. And, just so you know, we try our hardest to always give you the best product on the market. We understand the recent frustration in receiving multiple models with imperfections. Believe me, we would rather have you receive a perfect model the first time!

Regarding the paint issue, we became aware of it a little while ago from our own QC inspectors and complaints lodged with Customer Service, as well as from comments on die-cast forums. From the moment the problem became evident, we have been hard at work identifying and fixing it, and the factory has taken numerous remedial actions to prevent it from occurring in the future. This was a particularly challenging problem to track down -- please trust me when I say that we have spared no time or expense in correcting this situation.

Without getting too technical, the paint problems stemmed from a combination of a defective temperature sensor on one of the die-cast presses (resulting in faulty castings that were injected at too low a temperature) and excess moisture in the compressed air lines in the spray booths. Both issues have been corrected at the factory and will be closely monitored to make sure they don't occur in the future. While a few problem replicas may still slip through the cracks, going forward we should be shipping product that meets our stringent requirements.

I can tell you unequivocally that this paint problem was not the result of any budget cutbacks or reduction in support for our die-cast business. We have been producing models in this factory for 20+ years; it is not a new, untested factory that we tried to simply save a few bucks at the expense of quality. We remain committed to continuing to produce the highest-detail, highest-quality, 1:24 scale replicas available, just as we have been doing for years.

For the folks who have received recent DM replicas with QC issues, please know that your complaints have been heard, and accept our apologies for us not meeting not only our own high standards, but, more importantly, yours. For the folks who haven't been affected by the recent QC issues, and who continue to support our company with your purchases and your positive comments -- thank you. We appreciate it.

Our job now is to move everybody from the former group into the latter!

Editor's note: BRAVO MANNY!

Danbury Mint 40th Anniversary 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible

Saturday, 22 August 2009 09:43 by Peter
Here's the copy, direct from DM's website:

"In beautiful, rich hand-polished Burgundy Metallic, this classic Stingray's low silhouette -- evolved from Chevy's Mako Shark styling themes -- suggests speed from any angle. White stripe 15" Wide Ovals wrap around with deluxe chromed wheel covers, accentuating the car's "go get 'em" attitude.

You'll notice our 'Vette features the optional bright front fender "gill" trim near the delicate chrome foil "Stingray" script. Working revelations include pop-up headlights and the rear deck gas filler door.

Tilt the opening hood of our replica forward. Crouched and waiting is the Tri-Power big-block L71 V-8, all 427 cubic inches of it: special cam, three Holley two-barrel carburetors, cast-iron strong and willing to unleash 435ph on the road!

We've also included a tan convertible top, should you choose to display your Stingray all buttoned up.

Scale 1:24: 8-3/4" in length.
Item Number: 8932-0030
$129(plus $9 s&s)

4 Monthly Installments of $34.50
Satisfaction Guarantee
Now accepting orders. This product will be available August 31, 2009 and will ship 1-2 weeks thereafter."

Danbury Mint 50th Anniversary Edition 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville

Monday, 10 August 2009 18:08 by Peter
This is the companion piece to the 50th AE Series 62 Convertible (white with black top). It is essentially a repaint of the turquoise/white Coupe de Ville in an equally stunning silver with white roof. This release is not a Series 62 as the brochure indicates--it is definitely a Coupe de Ville. Some prefer the new color scheme, while I am quite content with the original. To each his own taste!

Update on the New 1965 Thunderbird from Danbury Mint

Monday, 3 August 2009 23:10 by Peter
Well, it's official, the 1965 Ford Thunderbird from our friends at the Danbury Mint will definitely be a light blue convertible with a medium blue interior, as seen in this image from a recent Classic Cars Preview Society advertising flyer (click to enlarge). It is not yet certain whether the color will be Arcadian blue, or Diamond blue (the paler shade evident in the brochure image), but I'm betting on the latter. Can't wait to see this baby in person!

Breaking News: All-New '65 Thunderbird from DM

Friday, 31 July 2009 09:24 by Peter
This just in from a reputable source, DM is introducing the first of the "flair birds." We've seen all of the "baby birds" (55-57), all of the "square birds" (58-60), most of the "bullet birds" (61-63), and now here comes the first precision model of one of the "flair birds," the 1965 Ford Thunderbird. I, for one, am overjoyed. No official word on color or body style yet, but rumor has it that it will be a light blue convertible. I'll keep you posted as more information becomes available. Check out some reference photos and discussion in our forums.

Danbury Mint Presents the 1963 A/C Cobra 289 Roadster

Saturday, 27 June 2009 00:42 by Peter
Here's our first good look at DM's newest offering, the 1963 A/C Cobra 289, and it looks like a real beauty. It should be for $299. This is another 1:18 scale model from Exoto (thank you, Jay), and from what I've heard they're quite spectacular in terms of accuracy and detail. Ask for DM item number 9196-0013, and tell 'em Peter sent you!

First Look at Danbury Mint's 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible LE 5,000

Tuesday, 16 June 2009 16:30 by Peter
Wow is the most common reaction I've heard to the paint scheme on DM's newest LE. We reported this two weeks ago (see below), but now we've got proof positive with this image from the Danbury Mint website. The coupe was spectacular, and this drop-top version promises to be every bit as amazing, right down to the reversible seat cushions. I ordered mine right away, and you can too. The item number is 8610-0013.

First Look at Danbury Mint's 40th Anniversary 1969 Firebird 400

Wednesday, 10 June 2009 11:42 by Peter
...Danbury has done it again. Even though it's a repaint, and even though the 69 muscle cars are overdone already, DM chose the perfect color this time--Carousel Red. This 40th anniversary is truly worth celebrating.

Here's that DM Anniversary Repaint of the '69 Camaro Convertible

Thursday, 4 June 2009 12:52 by Peter
...The one I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago. It's an old tooling to be sure so there's no convertible top, just a permanent boot cover, but darned if the Danbury Mint hasn't picked a killer color scheme for this 40th anniversary issue. Click here to see the full color brochure.
